黛絲是一個純樸的農村少女，一日她的父親得知自己原是古代貴族狄柏維爾之後，頻頻催促黛絲前去自稱是狄柏維爾家族後裔的貴婦家裡攀親，以求得到經濟上的資助。
貴婦的兒子艾列克是個玩世不恭的獵豔高手，黛絲到了他家後不幸遭到誘姦。多年後，黛絲平復創痛到一個牛奶廠工作，邂逅了安琪爾，禁不住安琪爾的熱烈追求，黛絲敞開心扉接納了這段感情；就在新婚之夜，黛絲向他陳訴沈痛的往事，沒想到這段告解竟為原本幸福美滿的婚姻蒙上一層陰霾……。
《黛絲姑娘》改編自英國批判小說家湯瑪士哈代（Thomas Hardy）作品，他在小說創作的發展中，佔有一席重要的地位。
湯瑪士哈代(Thomas Hardy)出生於1840年，因為父親是建築工，早年曾跟隨父親工作，他的小說以優秀的藝術形象記述了英國農村社會的歷史變遷。
哈代對角色的內心世界都有寫實的描寫，哈代著名的作品有《黛絲姑娘》、《瘋狂佳人》等，《嘉德橋市長》也是他重要作品之一，韓洽德（即 “嘉德橋市長”中的主角）這個悲劇英雄常被來與莎士比亞的李爾王相提並論。

Although the endings of Thomas Hardy's novels are tragic, there are many happy moments as the stories are unfolding. The author's prose is lyrical and poetic, vivid and descriptive, like paintings with rich colors and lights and shadows, especially those pictures and scenes of the rural areas in England, which is the trademark of Thomas Hardy's works, as he is a poet as well as a novelist.
The films converted from Thomas Hardy's original novels also tried to recapture those beautiful, unspoiled landscapes.
I would skip the introduction to his novels because they are classical and well known and timeless.
