Yang meets Yin
Yang natually expands outward, which is considered a forward motion. Yin naturally recoils inward, which is considered a backward motion. When Yang and Yin meet to interact, life is created. When Yang and Yin do not meet, life gradually diminished.
Reading The Diagram
The Yi Jing defines Yang as a force that expands outward,which gives Yang the freedom to move and jump around,thus, we see Yang as an active, unstable, and intangible energy, Yin, on the other hand, is defined as a force that works opposite to Yang.It recoils and condenes, and we see it as a calm and stable energy that can take on shape and form.
The Flourish diagram 泰卦is composed of Heaven trigram on the bottom and the Earth trigram on the top. The inner trigram Heaven, composed of pure Yang, expands outward to meet the outer trigam Earth, composed of pure Yin, as it recoils inward. This interaction between Yang and Yin causes a flourishing of life. It is as if, on the inside, a person's mind is filled with thoughts and ideas, yet on the outside, he appears calm and stable. Therefore, he is able to achieve success, and his life flourishes.
The Stagnate diagram否卦 is exactly the opposite of the Flourish diagram. It is composed of the Earth trigram on the bottom and the Heaven trigram on top. The Yang, already outside, expands outward even more. At the same time, the Yin, already inside, recoils inward even more. As the Yang and the Yin move farther away from each other, there is a stagnation of growth, and life diminishes. It is as if, on the inside, a person has no thoughts or plans, yet on the outside, he seems hysterically active. And the more hysterical he gets, the more he can't think, And the more hysterical he becomes, Nothing gets accomplished, and the person will probably fail in his efforts.
